Hi there!
I am Johanna, founder of studio schmal. This is the space where I would like to introduce you to my work as an artist and illustrator, in addition to art-workshops and -retreats, that I hold and curate - often in collaboration with other inspiring artists.
I work across media in drawing, painting, illustration and textile art. Here I explore traditional craftsmanship such as plant dyeing, quilting and embroidery with a view to contemporary expression and a transformative and holistic process.
My passion for the arts first led me to architecture, where I was able to develop a subtle sense of atmosphere, materiality, haptics and context, which strongly shapes my artistic work. I have expanded this discipline with further training in children‘s book illustration at EINA Barcelona and today I work at the interface between fine and applied arts and teaching.
After a decade in Berlin and residences in Barcelona and Vienna, I currently live in my home region Odenwald, a UNESCO Global Geopark south of Frankfurt am Main, together with my partner Cristóbal and our 2 children. Here I am surrounded by sunny hills and wide forests, reconnecting with nature and planning new adventures!

Ich bin Johanna, Gründerin von studio schmal. Neben meiner eigenen Arbeit als Künstlerin und Illustratorin stelle ich euch hier Kunst-Workshops und -Retreats vor, die ich - oft in Kollaboration mit anderen inspirierenden Künstler/innen - halte und kuratiere.
Ich arbeite Medien übergreifend in Zeichnung, Malerei, Illustration und Textilkunst. Hierbei erkunde ich traditionelle Handwerkstechniken wie Pflanzenfärberei, Quilten und Sticken mit Blick auf einen zeitgenössischen Ausdruck und einen transformativen und ganzheitlichen Prozess.
Meine Leidenschaft für die Künste führte mich zunächst zur Architektur, wo ich ein ausgeprägtes Gespür für Atmosphäre, Materialität, Haptik und Kontext entwickeln konnte, das meine künstlerische Arbeit stark prägt. Erweitert habe ich diese Disziplin um eine Weiterbildung in Kinderbuchillustration an der Kunsthochschule EINA in Barcelona und arbeite heute an der Schnittstelle von bildender und angewandter Kunst sowie Lehre.
Nach einem Jahrzehnt in Berlin und Aufenthalten in Barcelona und Wien lebe ich derzeit mit meinem Partner Cristóbal und unseren 2 Kindern in meiner Heimatregion Odenwald, einem UNESCO Geonaturpark südlich von Frankfurt am Main. Hier bin ich umgeben von sonnigen Hügeln und weiten Wäldern, in Wiederverbindung mit der Natur und plane neue Abenteuer!
